safety
what embr will and won’t do.
embr is an AI companion for the hours between therapy sessions. the honest version of “is it safe?” is a list of what it does, a list of what it refuses to do, and what happens when a conversation gets dangerous. here is all three.
in danger right now? call or text 988. embr can’t send help. 988 can.
embr will
- teach and reinforce coping skills from CBT, DBT, ACT and MI, in plain language, at any hour.
- walk someone through a guided exercise inside the chat: breathing, grounding, a thought record, urge surfing.
- say what it is at sign-in: a companion between sessions, for adults, not a clinician.
- surface 988 the moment a conversation turns toward danger, and keep 988 one tap away on every screen.
- answer a crisis conversation even when everything else is gated. crisis is never behind a wall.
embr won’t
- diagnose anyone, or tell someone what condition they have.
- advise on medication: starting, stopping, dosing, or mixing. that stays with a prescriber.
- replace a therapist, a program, or a crisis line, or claim to.
- pretend to be a person.
- keep what you type unless you switch that on yourself, and even then it is encrypted and yours to delete.
when it gets dangerous
how 988 shows up inside embr.
when what you type reads as a crisis, embr stops teaching. the reply changes register, a 988 card appears in the conversation with call and text options, and the exercise you were in is set aside. this is a fixed rule in the system, not a judgment the model makes fresh each time. outside of crisis, 988 still sits one tap away on every screen, on the sign-in page, in the drawer, and in the footer, and it is never behind the free-use limit. if a conversation hits that limit, a crisis conversation is still answered.

the honest questions
- is an AI mental health companion safe to use?
- It is safe when it knows its lane. embr is built to stay in one: it teaches and reinforces coping skills, it does not diagnose or advise on medication, and when a conversation turns toward danger it stops teaching and points to 988. It is for adults, it says what it is at sign-in, and it never gates a crisis conversation.
- what happens if I tell embr I want to hurt myself?
- embr switches into a safety mode. It stops the lesson, responds plainly, and puts 988 (call or text) in front of you, along with the option to text a crisis line. That response is deterministic, not left to chance. embr cannot send help to you; 988 can.
- can embr replace my therapist?
- No. embr is a bridge between sessions, not a substitute for one. It reinforces the skills a therapist or a group teaches, in the hours when no one is reachable. If you are not in care and want to be, embr will say so.
- does embr keep what I type?
- Not by default. The conversation runs on infrastructure we control and is not stored unless you switch on "keep my conversation" yourself. If you do, it is encrypted with a key tied to your account, expires after 90 days, and you can delete it any time.
- who built embr?
- Cole Dyar, DMFT, LAADC, CEAP, a working behavioral-health clinician whose doctoral research centered on psychosis and crisis management. The clinical boundaries in embr are his, written into the system itself, not added as a disclaimer.
the full detail on what is kept is in the privacy policy; every crisis line we point to is on crisis resources.
